2011
YMCA Masquerade Ball, honoring local legend
Len Andrew with the Laurance S. Rockefeller
award,
was a huge success on October 14 at
Trump National Westchester,
in Briarcliff NY.
About 200 people gathered at Trump
National Golf Club Friday night Oct 14
to honor Len Andrew for his civic and
philanthropic works, and to celebrate
the YMCA and Halloween. Guests were
treated to special theatrical
presentations by the Y Theatre Troupe,
under the direction of Peter Royston,
and to magical and eerie aerial
performances by Y Aerial Silks Director
Hilary Sweeney and Arley Morton, a
student in the program at the Y. Aubrey
Hawes introduced Len Andrew, and friend
of the family Gail Evans read a tribute
from Andrew's daughter Elizabeth. Y CEO
Gerry Riera presented the Laurance S
Rockefeller Award for community service
to Len Andrew. The presentation was
followed by dinner, Silent and Live
Auctions, and three hours of dancing to
the Park Avenue Band of Hank Lane Music
in NYC.
Leonard D.
Andrew served on the board of directors
of the Family YMCA at Tarrytown for over
twenty years, and was the Board Chair
from 1998-2001. Len is a member of the

the RSHM LIFE Center, the Foundation for
Religion and Mental Health, the Sleepy
Hollow Cemetery, the Transplant Support

Asbury Terrace Housing Corp., and the
Pocantico River Watershed Conservancy.

on these boards, Len has provided
volunteer legal services for the Pro
Bono Partnership, the International
Senior Lawyers Project, the Westchester
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Institute for
Non-Violence, the American Muslim
Women’s Association, and other nonprofit
organizations. Len is an active member
of the Rotary Club of the Tarrytowns
(Former President), Memorial United
Methodist Church in White Plains, and
the Interfaith Connection.
Professionally, Len worked for IBM for
30 years. He was General Counsel of IBM
Asia/Pacific from 1990 to 1994, retiring

-Thanks!
A Play Date with your
Family - - Y Healthy Kids
Day, 2011 in Patriots Park,
Route 9, Tarrytown NY (next
door to Warner Library).
Every year, the Family YMCA
at Tarrytown hosts an annual
Healthy Kids Day
event. Families from
up and down the Hudson
corridor enjoy a day filled
with fun, rides, health
information and healthier
food choices.
This year, over 800 people
attended the event in
Patriots Park, Tarrytown.
Healthy Kids Day
celebrates health,
nutrition, physical fitness,
and safety, and introduces
families to special YMCA
programs and activities that
encourage them to spend more
time playing and interacting
with one another and less
time using computers and
television. One of our
goals each year is to
increase awareness of the
relationship between
children’s nutrition
and exercise as it relates
to increasing trends of
childhood obesity and
diabetes.
As
always at Y
Healthy Kids Day,
our greatest
emphasis is on
healthy food and
exercise through fun
games and sports.
Y Fitness
Coordinator
Diane McCarthy led
kids in hula dance
and jump rope
competitions.
Y Volunteer "Coach
Jim" Leeper and Y
staff member Zeke
Lipson, with
assistance from
local Girl
Scouts, will
alternate between
the basketball
court, bowling with
the little ones, and
the park green,
leading tug of war,
potato sack and
other relay races.
Parachute and other
games entertained
the youngest
children, and youth
and family yoga
classes took place
on the north green,
by the face
painters.
AYSO coaches
took a table and ran
some soccer drills
and games.
There was something
for everyone,
including just
walking laps around
the park, greeting
friends and
neighbors, seeking
health, insurance,
dental and medical
advice and
information,
watching Rotary Duck
Derby races, or
getting faces
painted by local
Girl Scouts and the
RSHM Life Center
Teens.
Five NEW rides and
jumping houses for
little ones were
again
provided and manned
by "Send in the
Clowns."
2011 saw a
whole new and diverse array
of programs and services for
both children and adults.
Historical interpreters from
Philipseburg Manor
Restoration taught kids to
weave and card wool.
Also really exciting this
year was the Touch Tank
donated and staffed by Norwalk
Maritime Aquarium;
Youngsters of all ages built
wild and expansive Lego
creations
at the Y Lego table, led by
Y staff member Kathleen
McCarthy Udoff, and there
will be a hands-on music
experience with guitars and
drum pads, provided by local
music store, Rock Island
Sound.
Guests of Y Dance, The
Chiku Awali African Arts and
Culture Group, performed
African dance and drumming
throughout the day, as well
as offered instruction in
both dance and drumming
intermittently throughout
the afternoon.
This project was made
possible in part by the Arts
Alive program of
ArtsWestchester, with
funding from the
Decentralization Program of
the New York State Council
of the Arts.
Chutney
Masala of Irvington, Geordanes Market
of Irvington, Hope Hose Engine 79 and
Conqueror Hook & Ladder 37,
Nikki Toi's Catering, Main Street
Sweets and Jimmy's Softserve all offered
healthy food and dessert options.
Special guests
this year included Ken Wray of Sleepy Hollow
and Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
All our Y Senior Staff and many of our
program staff were on hand to welcome the
community to Healthy Kids Day.

Masquerade Ball

On Friday October 30, over 360 people attended
the first YMCA Halloween Masquerade Ball
fundraiser. The sold out event raised over
$68,500 for the Strong Kids Fund at the YMCA,
which helps ensure that underserved children,
including children from the recently closed Boys
and Girls Club, have access to high quality
childcare, after school care and summer camp
while their parents work or seek work.
Event sponsors included Legends Realty,
MetLife, Abbott & Price, Inc. Mahopac National
Bank, and Chiboust Bistro and Bakery.
Owner Jill Rose of Chiboust Bakery designed a
cake exclusively for the event: a Venetian
themed, pumpkin-headed jester, and served slices
of chocolate cake to guests. Other sponsors
included Community Preservation Corporation,
Provident Bank, Marshall & Sterling; Hudson
Health Plan and Hudson Valley Bank; and Allan
Block Agency and J.D. Moschitto & Associates.
Guests were greeted by a wailing ghost and the
Headless Horseman, listened to live jazz by Paul
Wood Quartet during the cocktail hour in the
Grand Hall, participated in Silent and Live
Auctions, and danced till after midnight to the
sounds of the Phase One Orchestra in the Caramai
Ballroom. Sleepy Hollow resident and long time
YMCA Board member Aubrey Hawes received
the Laurance S. Rockefeller Award for
community service. YMCA Board member Len
Andrew, former co-worker Larry Levy, daughter
Victoria Gearity and son Barrett Hawes helped
present the award on behalf of the YMCA Board of
Directors.
